Entrepreneur Chris Burch’s Nihiwatu Resort Named Best Hotel in the World for 2016

The Nihiwatu Resort in Indonesia, owned by accomplished businessman and entrepreneur Christopher Burch, was named the best hotel in the world by Travel + Leisure in 2016. Nihiwatu, which is located on the Indonesian island of Sumba, was first opened in 2015 after three years of renovations. The hotel is the brainchild of Chris Burch and hotel veteran James McBride, and the pair spent around 30 million dollars building and renovating Nihiwatu after purchasing the island it stands on in 2012.

Given Nihiwatu’s luxurious accommodations, it’s no surprise that it was named the best hotel in the world. The hotel is located on the west coast of Sumba and boasts beautiful beachfronts and 27 private villas. Nihiwatu is also surrounded by lush plant life, and guests can enjoy private plunge pools at each villa as well as spa treatments, surfing lessons and trips to nearby waterfalls, among other amenities.

When Burch and McBride bought the land in 2012, it was a hostel owned by a couple from New Jersey, but their $30 million renovations soon turned it into the five-star hotel that it is today. Nihiwatu has also turned into the largest local employer on Sumba, and a portion of its profits are donated to the Sumba Foundation to help support the local communities.
