He has been featured on various Television channels such as BBC News, Al-Jazeera, Fox News Channel’s The O’Reilly Factor, MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Mathews, CNN and HBO. In 2010, he spoke at TEDx at the University of Pennsylvania. Thor started human rights activism while he was a student at the University of Pennsylvania where he led a protest that sought for his father’s release. He had been wrongfully detained. Thor Havlorssen; dethroning tyrants one at a time

People that choose to spend the wee hours of the morning flooding other people’s mail boxes with controversial emails, or sending Wickr messages that are encrypted aren’t exactly what the society considers regular guys. Well, Thor Havlorssen is anything but regular. His pursuits, mainly after tyrants and those that oppress others and breach human rights have made him famous in some quotas and infamous in others. He owns the Human Rights Foundation that he launched in 2005 and is based in New York.

Mr Thor considers himself a child of many nations. He is part Norwegian and part Venezuelan. His leadership and advocacy seems to be part of his genetics as he comes from a lineage of leaders on both sides. His grandfather on his father’s side was the King Consul for the Norwegian government in Venezuela during the Second World War. The first president of Venezuela is a direct descendant of his mother. The mother also has the same lineage as Simon Bolivar, the leader who freed Latinos from Spanish rule. His philosophy is that human rights are the fundamental basis of all other discussions.

The background that shaped Thor’s current activism

People who experience things first hand, more often than not, end up being advocates against the situations. When Thor was growing up, he witnessed his father’s human rights being violated. His father was locked up in a prison in Caracas and suffered a lot for being a drug Czar. His mother was also shot during riots against Hugo Chavez.

Despite his sad past, Thor is not a bitter man, he loves all of humanity. He respects people that fight for other people’s rights, the ones who defy the norm and work for the freedoms and fights of the others. Thor has had his fair share of mistreatment, like the Vietnam interview that went sour and his crew ended up hiding cameras in their rectum.

Thor respects everyone who is on the same mission as he is. His company has a staff of 12 from around the world and gets sponsorship from PayPal’s co-founder and Google’s Sergey Brin.

George Soros: A Better Plan for the Refugees

Public figure George Soros has spoken out about his view on the tragedy of the Syrian refugee crisis. He says that Europe has failed to act appropriately. He especially singles out the EU (European Union) in his recent article in Marketwatch. George Soros names the lack of a complete plan as a cause of what could be a larger problem very soon.

The reasoning is that many countries are not focused on the global community, but rather only themselves. Because of this, there is needless suffering on behalf of the migrants from the nearby countries such as Syria.

The answer to the problem is not to treat the migrants like sub-human animals, but rather to embrace them fully and create a plan to accommodate them, according to Soros. George Soros points out that Europe certainly has the capacity to accept the refugees. What is needed is a plan however.

The issue begins with Syria, because this is where most of the issues have taken hold. There needs to be more aid provided to them. With aid being given to Syria by the United Nations, it could make the situation better overall. Here is the plan that Soros laid out, in 6 steps:

First: The EU should commit to a certain number of refugees being accepted each year. A tentative amount to begin with is one million people.

Second: Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey must be helped quickly. They are very important in this fight, and this requires funding.

Third: Speed is so important because the quicker that the migrants begin to work, the quicker the situation will resolve itself. If migrants are treated like slaves at the borders, however, then this furthers the problem. Borders need to focus on treating people well and a special agency should be formed for this. There should also be a special group that helps process asylum seekers faster so they can resume a normal life.

Fourth: It is vital that safe travels are ensured from the front lines of military conflict all the way to the destination country of those seeking asylum. Key in this part of the plan are the countries of Italy and Greece. They sit next to the afflicted region and can provide a starting point for safety and further travels.

Fifth: Without financing, the refugees will have problems. The EU must step up to ensure that the asylum seekers to do not feel hopeless and thus fail to complete their journey.

Sixth: While NGO’s and church organizations have been a large help in this matter, they simply cannot do their best without appropriate funding. They must staff their offices and have technology to do their job. For this, the EU should step in and assist them.

Perhaps most troubling about this situation is that it could have been prevented, according to Soros. Other plans don’t treat the refugees well. This plan will be a better way to accomplish the goal of safety and prosperity for everyone.

Thor Halvorssen Shines the Light on Human Rights.

With so many different cultures in the world, there is one subject that is apparent throughout even the most primitive cultures, Human Rights. It is in some shape, form or fashion an issue throughout the world. To battle this ongoing issue the Human Rights Foundation (HRF) was formed.

The Human Rights Foundation was founded in 2005 in New York to raise awareness and educate society as a whole on how to promote freedom and tolerance in regions that are plagued with human right issues. Their philosophy is simple. Target and educate world leaders, intellectual individuals and society as a whole, who have the influence in their countries to promote human rights within their respective cultures. They aim to accomplish this with seminars, publications, news and video media to initiate a movement forward in the right direction.

The Human Rights Foundation was founded by Thor Leonardo Halvorssen Mendoza, most commonly referred as Thor Halvorssen. He is a human rights activist and film producer that recognizes the need for education, throughout the world, of the travesties of the lack of human rights that many people continue to suffer to this very day. He decided to use his talents to get this very important issue out to the public. He stance is very basic. He states “I don’t care if these injustices are being committed by “right-wing or left-wing regimes. Havorssen is also the founder of the Oslo Freedom Forum. It is a heavily promoted and successful festival that has grown immensely and is approaching the status of being as big as Devos Economic Forum.

Halvorssen was born in Venezuela. His father, Thor Halvorssen Hellum, and mother, Hilda Mendoza both have been the victim of senseless violence through government corruption. These experiences led him to found HRF and be what many call “a champion of the underdog and the powerless.” This is just the start of what is considered a very influential and rapidly moving stage of education of the people and the eradication of the injustices that prevent the world from becoming a more peaceful society as a whole.
